8 X 10 Tasveer joins A-list duds in 2009

There were huge expectations from Akshay Kumar-starrer 8X10 Tasveer, but the supernatural thriller has failed to impress audiences and fallen flat at the box office.

Releasing after a lean period of almost two months, the film was expected to be a box-office saviour -- instead it turned out to be another A-list flop.

Despite being the first and only Bollywood film that opened in the second quarter year, it is Akshay's second big-budget dud in the year after
Chandni Chowk To China that opened the first quarter for biggies this year.

It is also director Nagesh Kukunoor's second endeavour gone wrong at the box office in terms of commercial cinema post
Bombay To Bangkok(2008).

"The reaction to
Tasveer is not at all up to the mark. It is in fact very disappointing. Neither the public reaction nor the collections are good -- considering the fact that it is an Akshay Kumar starrer and that it opened as a solo release over a long weekend due to Ram Navami," said Sakshi Mehra, an exhibitor and president of the Motion Pictures Association of Delhi-Uttar Pradesh.

"The business for the film started falling from Sunday onwards, when otherwise, it should have soared. And with the bad word of mouth now, there is no chance even for it to improve at the box office," he added.

Released on April 3,
8X10 Tasveer also stars Ayesha Takia, Sharmila Tagore, Javed Jaffery, Girish Karnad, Anant Mahadevan and Benjamin Gilani in pivotal roles.

It is the story of a young man Jai (Akshay) who has a supernatural gift to look into the past of dead people by looking at their 8x10 photographs.

A PVR official said on the condition of anonymity that "the film has managed to collect 40 percent over the opening weekend despite holidays." He further added that the collections are slow.

Made on a budget of approximately Rs 600 million,
8X10 Tasveer released with around 1,500 prints worldwide and the least hype for any Akshay starrer since the last four years. The actor too was reported to be underplaying the promotion of the film.

Trade analysts are not even excepting more than the initial business for the movie. "The film is dull and shatters all hopes from a director like Nagesh Kukunoor. People had high expectations from the film, as it was after a long gap that a big-budget movie was hitting the screens but it all went wrong," said an industry source from Mumbai.

"Whatever audiences it managed to draw over the weekend was courtesy Akshay and the supernatural element. However, due to its horrible packaging, it is going to suffer a bad word-of-mouth. It is not likely that the movie will survive more than a week or 10 days at the maximum," he added.

Utpal Acharya, Vice-President (programming and distribution) of Inox Leisure, added: "It's a different movie altogether and not an in and out masala commercial cinema but due to Akshay's fan following, people have visited the theatres and it has been a good weekend with around 45 per cent occupancy overall."

"The movie has done good and has been liked by the multiplex audience. However, it doesn't have a life more than around two weeks," he added.

Meanwhile, with the ongoing confrontation between the producer and distributors on one side and the exhibitors on the other over revenue sharing for forthcoming projects, April is again in the dry mode with only low-budget films on the anvil.

Akshay Kumar and Aishwarya receive Padma Shri from President of India

aishakshayprez.jpg

Tuesday 31st of March 2009 is a day Akshay Kumar and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan won't forget for the rest of their lives. After all, it's the day when the 'Khiladi' of Bollywood and the former Miss World received the highest civilian honour- Padma Shri from the President of India- Smt.Pratibha Patil

While Akki looked dapper in a formal black suit, Ash was her dazzling best in a rose coloured saree. The event which took place in the capital also had Aishwarya's hubby dearest Abhishek Bachchan in attendance. It surely must have been a proud moment for AB Jr. to see his better half being bestowed with the top civilian honour. As for Akki, this is one honour which he would cherish for the rest of his life.

Interestingly, the two Padma Shri recipients Akki and Ash will be seen together in Vipul Shah's film Action Replay.

Shah Rukh and me have made it on our own” - Akshay

akshay Shah Rukh and me have made it on our own - Akshay As Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi reaches mid-week, it is crystal clear that Shah Rukh Khan and Yash Raj Films have a big money spinner up their sleeves. With no questions being asked about the big opening that Ghajini is all set to take, industry is smiling again. Hat-trick of big bucks flowing in is pretty much on the anvil as Chandni Chowk To China is on it’s way to create a hat-trick of box office winners once it releases on 16th January 2009. No wonder, there is a lot riding on each of these biggies.

Says Akshay Kumar, “Shah Rukh Khan and me are the only actors in the current times who have attained this level of success all on our own without any Godfather backing us. We came without any connections in Bollywood and still have managed to reach this stage by sheer hard work and determination.”

He chooses to shrug away the ‘who amongst the two is supreme’ talk when the question was raised around his rap number in Chandni Chowk To China. In the song composed by Bohemia which would play during the film’s end credit titles, there are a few lines that go as:

“Mera Ek Haath Ka Khel, Sara Bollywood Ek Mera Koi Nahi Mel,
Acting Karne Chale Vaise Hazaaron, Badsaah Ek Baaki Sare Fail”

Is this the superstar talking for himself? “But if you listen carefully, am I bringing in the ’superstar’ angle at all? And there is a lot of other stuff which is being talked about in the song, especially the parts around me coming from the Chandni Chowk lanes and beating the odds to live life on my own terms. Where does he question around me reigning supremacy come in? In any case, a rap number belonging to such situation and genre is all about attitude and this is what is demonstrated in the entire song. Let’s not make much ado about it”, protests Akshay.

Priyanka, Akshay together again, for a show

Mumbai, Akshay Kumar and Priyanka Chopra, who had stopped working together in spite of doing successful films like "Aitraaz" and "Mujhse Shaadi Karogi", came together after a four-year gap for a show in Hong Kong.

Akshay and Priyanka performed together on stage Thursday for Christmas at the Convention Centre in Hong Kong for the show - From Chandni Chowk To Hong Kong.

"Yes, I performed on stage with Akshay Kumar in Hong Kong. It was great fun," Priyanka, who has delivered two hits in the row - "Fashion" and "Dostana" - told IANS.

And what a rollicking show it was! Audiences have been craving to see the hit pair together for three years. Joining the pair was Bipasha Basu.

For reasons best known to them, Akshay and Priyanka, who came together for the first time in "Andaaz", were never seen as a couple on screen after "Waqt - Race Against Time". So deep was the cleft between the pair that Suneel Darshan had to scrap an Akshay-Priyanka starrer after picturising a song with them.

After Priyanka drifted away, Akshay tried to form a screen pair with Kareena Kapoor by doing some not so successful films like "Talaash", "Bewafaa" and "Tashan". When that didn't work too well, the actor turned to Katrina Kaif for professional sustenance.

Watch 'Jumbo' and read its comics too

New Delhi, Children looking forward to animation film "Jumbo", which has Bollywood stars doing the voice-overs, now have more reason to smile. Apart from the movie, they can also get themselves "Jumbo" comics and activity books.

"We are releasing a comic that would trace the story of the film as well as activity books ranging from colouring books, sticker books, origami books to alphabet and number books," Manish Verma, head of Junior Diamond Comics, told IANS.

This is not the first time Junior Diamond Comics has taken such an initiative. Earlier, they have released comics for films like "Hanuman", "Hanuman Returns" and "Roadside Romeo". They are also doing comics for Priyadarshan's forthcoming "Bam Bam Bhole".

Though the sale of the comics generally depends on the popularity and success of the films, a minimum of 200,000 copies are usually sold, Verma said.

As for comics of "Jumbo", the story of a young elephant who sets out in search of his parents, Verma foresees good profits. He feels the film will do well, thanks to Akshay Kumar's voice-over as well as by others and promotions.

"We are quite confident about 'Jumbo' as it has a name like Akshay Kumar attached with it. He is doing a lot of promotion for the film and that has raised its overall value. It would also have a positive effect on our sales," he said.

"Jumbo" comics are priced at Rs.40 and would hit the stalls Dec 25 - the date of the film's release. The comics would be released in five languages - Hindi, English, Tamil, Marathi and Telugu.

Verma added that comics have become an important part of the merchandising packet of most animated films.

"A lot of production houses have adopted a different mediums to sell their film and that now includes merchandising. They make 10 different products to create brand presence - mugs, stationery, T-shirts, caps and now even comics are a part of it.

"Through these, filmmakers are able to capture the children's market and comics have a good shelf life," Verma explained.
